If I think the person is authentic with their smile then I will smile back, but if I think there is something else going on in that person's mind then I look at them and glare until they look away. In these times you really cannot trust alot of people. At least where I come from. =)

Smile back and nod. It's polite. If it's a cute girl, then I smile and
blush, and sometimes do the whole "left eyebrow up slightly and nod ever so slightly which means "You look nice today" mainly I do the eyebrow thing because I have "foot in mouth" syndrome.
Anyway, if on the off chance I actually see someone smile, I'm happy to see it. Everyone seems to be so damn aggravated these days.

I always smile back, even when I know my smile will have me stuck in a supermarket aisle for the next 20 minutes chatting to the elderly, trying to politely excuse myself without offending them.....

I always smile back at them and say hello or good morning or good afternoon. I don't know if that's wierd but half the time people don't even respond they just keep on walking.

I ALWAYS smile back and say Good Morning or Good Afternoon. It only takes a minute to be nice and polite. What harm does it do?

A smile is contagious and it might brighten up someone’s day. There are people who smile for unhealthy intentions but over all a smile is priceless. So smile back!

In this world of unneighbourly coldness, people think someone acting with politeness is someone to be suspicious of or rebuked.
The norm is to go around with emotionless faces just staring blankly at their feet so not make eye contact in case they have to give a forced embarressed greeting.
SMILE AND SAY HELLO ! HAVE A NICE DAY!
Something other than ooh someone acknowledged me I better put my barrier up.
