In some states it is legal for medicinal purposes. The government is scared to legalize (even though it is way less harmful then drinking) because they have played up how bad it is for decades. The war against drugs started in the late 60's early 70's telling us "how bad" all the drugs are for you. They really messed up though by exaggerating everything. They lost credibility. They won't come out and admit that it's not as bad as they say. They're scared!
When have you ever heard of someone overdosing on marijuana? Or wrecking a car from being too high? But yet, they allow anti-depressants and alcohol to be legal.

But the smear campaign against it, from "reefer madness" to "gateway drug," has been so successful that people see it as the first step down the sliding step toward losing the war on drugs. (Yes, I think that's funny too). Also, apparently cops are having to spend extra time monitoring the places that are allowed to dispense it, because authorities are so worried that the wrong people will get or fake prescriptions, and we certainly can't have that (she typed facetiously).
