Could be any one of a number of things!
Faulty Idle valve - faulty injectors (fuel injection) - Tickover needs setting (carburettor models) - Faulty Engine Management Unit - Faulty Lambda Sensor - Crappy plugs - Too much fuel to engine - Too little fuel to engine - Valve timing out! Automatic choke faulty - any number of sensors around the engine!
The list is endless really!

could be lots of things really, but on taking the info you supply I would think you trouble is in the carburettor, slow running jet blocked,( but I'm not familiar with this car, it could have fuel injection for all I know) would let the engine run at higher rev's but would not run at a tic over. there are so many things that could cause this problem simple things like vacuum tube /pipe not connected. manifold drawing air at carb' gaskets, I could go on and on check all simple things first, was it a NEW engine or second hand one that was fitted. or was it a short block? if it was then I would assume all new gaskets were fitted.

If it is injected then it is quite likely to be the fuel governor valve malfunctioning. It is also possible that the mixtures are incorrectly set for the type of air flow vs valve timing vs exhaust that you have fitted.

issues to envision out if the automobile is a Diesel. 1st examine that the injectors are ok. 2d replace the gasoline filter out and third be certain there is not any water interior the gasoline tank it sounds daft even though it takes place. If the automobile is a petroleum it could desire to be the gasoline pump. which ever variety of vehicle it sounds like a loss of gasoline.

Spark plugs, spark plug wires, bad fuel
The timing could be out, a new engine doesn't mean the timing was set correctly.
Or the distributor could be off by a bit or a lot.

Has this happened only since the engine change? If so you have the plug leads in the wrong sequence. Your car is only firing on one or two cylinders.

Could be the starter motor or the alternator.
Looks as if the petrol is not getting through
If you have RAC or AA they will check it for you.
