My son started getting too big around 5-6 months, so I think you'll be okay, but if you plan on doing this for a while, you may want to think about setting up that crib.
Also, being in a new place, the baby may not even like the bassinet because it's 'different', he may even want to sleep with you/close to you. And since you said you don't know much about babies, let me just tell you, do not put a pillow near him when he sleeps and not too many blankets up near his face, he could suffocate.
I think it's really great of you/your family taking in emergency foster care children (where I'm from, we call it "respite"). You must have big hearts! And realize, most children in need of respite care, really need that extra love and attention that they may not be getting at home. I can tell ya though, you're giving those parents quite a break this weekend and they are probably very greatful for it. Babies can be tough to handle sometimes.

I would go for the crib. it's safer, and the childs weight wouldn't have to be a factor. If you were to put it in the bassinett, at 5 1/2 months, the baby may be too heavy.

The baby will be too big for the basssinette. Go for the crib. You will be surprised how quickly you will get used to having the baby around.
Can I just say it is so nice to see that there are still caring people in this world. It is a very good thing that yourself and your husband are doing! Keep up the good work x

put the baby in a crib. get a new crib because your husbands old crib may not be up to today's safety standard. u might have to ask the social worker for some $$$ for a new crib.
good luck! babies are such a joy. i am so sure on saturday u will have way more questions about feedings, nap time, diaper changing etc.

My baby is 5 months old and she's just starting to take an interest in her toys now. I try and introduce just a few at a time though rather than just land them all on her at once. She really likes her Leapfrog activity centre and her Lamaze Emily doll. She's also has a toy elephant and she likes to suck on his trunk. Inevitably though, it's all the things she shouldn't be playing with she really wants. Her favourites at the moment are mobile phones, remote controls, pc keyboards, coffee cups(only when you're drinking out of it though!), earrings, necklaces and hair - any hair, any where! I could have saved myself a fortune on bright plastic tat if I'd known this in advance!

My twins slept in one till they were 6 months but they were small being premature, and my fourth child who is adopted was actually still in a moses basket until a two weeks before she came to us at 7.5 months, it depends how big baby is really and also what baby is used too, might be worth asking what they sleep in a home

I would go with the crib over the bassinet as at 51/2months it will be much safer. Better to er on the side of caution.
