I saw an obgyn for the first time today. I told her that I have itching in my vaginal area every once and a while and she told me that it could be due to the dryness of the cold weather, or a yeast infection. However, when she examined me she said that I could possibly have herpes so she prescribed a weeks worth of Valtrex, gave me two sample tablets, and told me to get my Bloodwork done to test for herpes. Then she told me to come back in two to three weeks (I made an appointment for March 1).

However, after I got home I was wondering why she gave me the medication before having the blood test. Should I wait for the blood test results before taking the medication??

I ask this because I've never been sexually active before my current boyfriend, he claims that he doesn't have herpes, we always use condoms, and I think that I had this itching before I was with him.

Your bf could have herpes and not know it or be in denial about it. Condoms reduce the risks enormously but are not 100% effective in stopping STDs. If you do have it then your bf needs to be tested as he most surely will have it as he is your only sexual partner.
I would personally start the medication immediately...just in case.

Start the meds now. It won't hurt you if you don't have it. He may not have herpes or he may not know.Herpes can be transmitted through more than just sex. Do you get cold sores on your mouth? Its pretty much the same thing. You can transmit it to your vaginal area if you have one on your lip. You could have had it for years and not have known it. Also condoms are not all that effective against herpes because its not transmitted through fluid, it's skin to skin contact and a condom doesn't cover everything. One more thing my doctor also thought I may have it and started meds before the culture came back and I didn't have it. My poor hubby got smacked for nothing. lol.Anyways yes take the meds and you may never find out how you got it just take precautions not to spread it.Getting on a routine dose can decrease the risk to your partner, also he should be tested. He may have it and not know it.

If it was my body I would wait for the blood work. Why put a medication into your body that you may not need. Call the office and tell them your thoughts and see what they say.
