I am visiting Malaysia first time for a holiday. Could you suggest a good hotel or two which has local(Malaysian) deco and ambience, located not in the business district. My budget is about USD150 per night. Please avoid Westin, Sheraton, Hilton, Four Season, or any other US chains as I really want to appreciate localness. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to Malaysia (in advance)! KL offers pretty good choices of hotels to suit your very needs. But if u r looking for hotel that has good local ambience, why not try Shang-ri La Hotel, located near the KL Tower and 5minutes walk from the Twin Towers, KLCC. Mandarin Hotel at KLCC would also be a good choice. Or hop over to Trader's Hotel(another chain of hotels from the Shang group).By the way, Shang-ri La Hotel has a list of accolades that will make u drool. For US$150, u can stay anywhere in KL, without a hitch!
If u want to be adventuorous, go down to Melaka where u can REALLY get a local ambience in the traditional Baba Nyonya hotels in Melaka. That will transport u back to the 15th/16th Century. That particular culture still lives on among the locals. And it won't even cost u half of what u r willing to pay. Plus, Melaka is THE Historical City of Malaysia, just 2 hours by bus from KL. A must for first timers, trust me, you will never regret it. And while u r at it,(in Melaka i mean) try out the local delicacies....mmmm, simply divine. Have a good stay man.

The best way to make your selection is to look at a hotel directory of Kualu Lumpur and run through the various images displayed. I think that you will sense the ambience from the designs that are portrayed.

USD 150 is a lot. You can try Istana Hotel. I think it is only USD 80 per night or so...? Good location and atmosphere. One more hotel called Federal Hotel, one of the first hotel in KL. Not too old...and it's ok to stay.
If you are travelling to North MY, Penang, with lovely beach, try any of the beach front hotel and you will surely enjoy them.

Have a pleasant stay!

Lookig at your preference, i would personally recommend Hotel Istana..its a 5 stars hotel located right in the middle of the Golden Triangle aka Bukit Bintang. The hotel itself boast of its Malay Traditional Palace interior and services..for USD150..you can get a great Suite and expect to be served like a prince! It also located very walking distance to great and luxury shopping malls, foods and entertainment such as Espanda Beach Club...Nuovo and etc..(these clubs are among the best at the area..)..walk about another 10 minutes, you will get to the KLCC Twin Towers!

I've stay in this hotel before and simply would love to be back there again!
