I'm not sure what constitutes the "major" greatest films of all time but there are so many good ones out there to choose from. Since you mentioned HMV I'm guessing that you live in the UK. In the United States, our top movies and movie actors are awarded with Oscars (in case you didn't know). "Dead Man Walking" won 1 Oscar (for best actress) and was nominated for 3 additional Oscars so I'm a little surprised that you haven't heard of it. You can search the database of movies that were nominated and/or won Oscar awards at the web site below. Browse through it and you'll find a lot of quality selections that you may want to add to your collection.
Some good movies:
Mystic River
Memento
The Princess Bride (my favorite guilty pleasure)
Ray
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
Crash
March of the Penguins
House of Flying Daggers
Memoirs of a Geisha
Caddyshack
Shawshank Redemption
Ghostbusters (cheesy but fun)
Blazing Saddles
Carrie
The Color Purple
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Fatal Attraction

This is an odd thing to say. You haven't watched millions of films and there are literally millions of films out there.
Let's start simple.
In a survey by film directors, the jury of Cannes that year and thousands of movie journalists, The Third Man (Orson Wells) was voted as the greatest film of all time. I'm not saying this is the definitive answer to that question, I'm just wondering if you've seen the film. Have you?
Have you ever seen Gilda? La vita est bella? La belle et la bête by Jean Cocteau?
Dead Man Walking was a fairly good film with Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn and if you liked Penn in this film then he's even better in The Assassination of Richard Nixon, in my opinion.
Try to get your hands on some foreign films and instead of going to HMV, which has a very limited stock of films selected for contractual and marketing rather than artistic reasons, choose your own films by ordering them on the internet.
My suggestion as to a good film well worth watching is Nueve Reinas. It's Argentinian, the story of two con men in the streets of Buenos Aires just before the banking crisis. It's brilliant and I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

I take it that with the inverted commas you mean the greaterst subjectively as there are literally thousands upon thousands of movies to sift through.
In my lifetime I would say I have seen possibly 2000 - 3000 movies at the cinema and countless on television, and with the exception of my top 3 (personally I mean) they are alway changing.
The 70s was pretty vacuous as a whole, but there are some absolute gems, Vanishing Point springs to mind along with Thunderbolt & Lightfoot.
The 80s became deluged with "Blockbusters" but again seek and you will find padawan, here The Hitcher comes to the fore.
Going back before that between the mid 30s and upto 1969 Hollywood produced classic after classic, as one person pointed out "third Man" with Welles in brilliant form, as well as his directorial debut "Citizen Kane", and acted out superbly by the Mercury Players who made up the theatre group that Kane worked with.
That is just Americana. You have French cinema Tati is worshipped but certainly overlooked by the public at large.
British cinema - The Ealing Comedies as an example, and then the daddy of them all - Bollywood.
Indian cinema produces an incredible volume of films year after year and outside of festivals, they are rarely discussed.
Sorry I missed Asian cinema Korean - Oldboy et al
Japanese - as far back as The Seven Samurai
Chinese cinema cor the list goes on.
If you truly enjoy cinema as you say you do take trips to smaller cinemas, look out for foreign film festivals, and research the films in cinema that you haven't seen.
Prior to going to see it pick a genre you are comfortable with, say Horror, French movie and then watch "Switchblade Romance".
I could go on and probably will down at the pub tonight.
Enjoy
