That or the other girl turned him down.

Sounds to me like he's just hedging his bets.

There are a couple of things that might be going on..
First scenario:
She is very in love with him, and he know's it, so he takes her for granted, after she found out, she got really mad and didn't want to be with him anymore, which made him scared of loosing her, thus making him want her more.. the problem with this, is that she is probably going to forgive him completely within a year (if she hasn't already), and she is going to go back to being the constant love that's always there.. and they are going to be stuck in a love rollercoaster..
Second scenario:
He was having feelings for this other girl, and after trying it out, realised that it just wasn't the same..that he wanted actually what he already had for the rest of his life.
either way, she should probably not marry him, a girl should always try to have the hand in the relationship, and if she doesn't it's hard to get it back.. plus you have to be really strong to be able to pull it off.. Second, if you lost the hand, and he cheated, you probably won't completely regain it, and if you do, it won't last long, because the girl is always going to be thinking about it, it's always going to be there, in the background, which is going to make her insecure, and her insecurity is going to make her loose the hand again..
If you are her, or her friend.. try to convince yourself/her, that no matter how wonderful he is, he CHEATED.. and that's always going to linger between you, this is a great time to stop this vicious circle, he might be a great guy, and he might really love you, but he will take you for granted again.. and he might cheat again..
He damaged your selfesteem, and you might never go back to feeling so desirable as you used to.. not with him.. good luck..

He must have seen after chasing the other girl that the grass is not greener on the other side; or needed to take a break to figure out whether or not he really wanted to marry her.

Maybe the other girl was the complete opposite of his g/f and it convinced him that the g/f is what he wants in a life partner.

Too much analysis! Half the guys on the planet don't have a clue why they themselves do things and you think you can figure them out? Even God just shakes his head in wonder.

He chose his wife because that's who he wants to spend the rest of his life with. He's not mate material for anyone though.

Probably out of guilt or to try to prove she (the other one) means nothing to him! I would stay the heck away from that cheater!

he now realizes the other woman meant nothing to him at all, think he now sees who he really loves and doesn't want her to get away from him. sounds as if he has seen the other woman for what she is and realizes his girlfriend was who he really loved all along.
