I will have been dating a guy for two and a half weeks. I really like him, and while I don't believe in the marketing hype surrounding Valentine's Day, I also don't want him to think that I don't care about him. At the same time, I don't want him to think I'm over the top by buying into Valentine's Day when I hardly know him. Asking him his feelings about Valentine's Day makes me nervous that I may be taking the fun out of dating. Help!

just go on as usual id say. if you dont really believe in valentines day, just go on like you have, growing as the relationship does. Maybe a rose or some chocolates to show you do care about him but nothing over the top =) Probably dont ask him about his feelings, just look at how he acts around you and interpret them as best you can, lol.

I found some good info on a website:

STEP 1: Have realistic expectations. Some (very few) people go all out on Valentines Day, even when they are casually dating somebody. But, let's be honest: if you've been seeing someone for a month or less, chances are the whole flowers/candy/expensive dinner/jewelry thing probably won't happen for you.
STEP 2: BUT, don't just avoid and/or ignore the holiday all together. That makes for a very awkward and rough start to a relationship. Instead, bring it up to your boyfriend/girlfriend/"friend" and have a mature conversation about your plans.
STEP 3: Start small. Think: a nice (but not too expensive) dinner, bringing your girlfriend a modest bouquet of flowers, writing your boyfriend/girlfriend an endearing but light-hearted note, making a mixed tape/CD etc. You get the point.
STEP 4: Don't be sad or insulted if your new flame isn't too over eager about celebrating the "Day of Love" with you quite yet.
STEP 5: Finally, on February 14th, dress the part, put a smile on your face, and don't act uncomfortable at all. Just have fun! If you do this, your new relationship will survive Valentines Day without the added pressure the holiday normally brings on!

Take him out on V-Day and go to somewhere a little more special (idk, a restaurant that you don't usually go, or something like that). That way you don't go over the top, but you still show that you care about him. Have fun!
