Reasons for the retention of homework:
1) To allow the student to recap/go over what has been taught in class thereby ensuring greater retention.
2) In achieving 1) above- it frees up class time for teacher to move on to new subject matter
3) It allows opportunity for student to do their own research for example on essay questions and to acquire the habit of sourcing information.
4)It allows the teacher to monitor students' understanding or lack of what has been taught to date and identify/ address individual weaknesses
5)It provides a structure for pre- exam revision

If you're looking for those who advocate that homework should be abolished, look up Alfie Kohn -- he's a researcher who argues against homework extensively. I think there was also a New York Times article recently about some school districts knocking down their homework requirements. There is another book written by two women on the issue of homework, but I can't remember the name of the book or the authors.
If you are arguing that homework should be retained, remember that you can argue that it should be kept but reduced. For example, if five algebra problems are enough to reinforce a particular skill to the point where mastery is attained, then there isn't a reason to do fifteen such problems. You can also argue that homework should be changed so that it is really relevant to learning at the higher order skills.

There is a school here in Lexington, Ky that does not believe in homework. They just go to school year round and only have like 3 weeks off in a year, but everyone that graduates from the school are really smart and they never did homework. They believe that it causes unwarranted stress on the child and prohibits them from having an active lifestyle.

No, homework does help us learn most of the time no matter how much we dislike it. What should be abolished are the pointless assignments that teachers make students just because, as well as the assignments that have nothing to do with the lesson and confuse students.

Homework reinforces important skills and more importantly lets the parents know what the child is learning.

no because no matter how much you hate it you have to admit that it will help you in the "real world". Also it helps you get more practice in for your tests and quizes that are coming up. It will help you become more comfortable and understand what you are doing better.
