Something he would not buy himself because it is too extravagant. Something that reflects his interests.
He has something that needs replaced but the replacement is too frivolous. or he has been looking at something but says wow that too much. That is what you want to get him.
If he wants a new therm then OK, if not all your saying is I view you as steel worker. Try to go with somthing not associated with WORK.
