RAM acronym for RANDOM ACCESS MEMORY, a type of computer memory that can be accessed randomly; that is, any byte of memory can be accessed without touching the preceding bytes. RAM is the most common type of memory found in computers and other devices, such as printers.
There are two basic types of RAM:
dynamic RAM (DRAM)
static RAM (SRAM)
The two types differ in the technology they use to hold data, dynamic RAM being the more common type. Dynamic RAM needs to be refreshed thousands of times per second. Static RAM does not need to be refreshed, which makes it faster; but it is also more expensive than dynamic RAM. Both types of RAM are volatile, meaning that they lose their contents when the power is turned off.
In common usage, the term RAM is synonymous with main memory, the memory available to programs. For example, a computer with 8M RAM has approximately 8 million bytes of memory that programs can use. In contrast, ROM (read-only memory) refers to special memory used to store programs that boot the computer and perform diagnostics. Most personal computers have a small amount of ROM (a few thousand bytes). In fact, both types of memory (ROM and RAM) allow random access. To be precise, therefore, RAM should be referred to as read/write RAM and ROM as read-only RAM.

I'll answer this w.r.t computers since you haven't specified so as to what exact phrase it relates.
RAM simply is an acronym for Random Access Memory. It's a type of mamory which is "volatile" in nature ! Meaning, the contents that is stored in it is erased once the power goes off. That is, once you shutdown or restart the computer, all the contents will be deleated. It is also refered to as a "Primary" memory.
Functionality :-
Every computer has fundamentally three types of memory.
1. System cache ( Processor Cache )
2. Primary Memory ( RAM )
3. Secondary Memory ( HDD, Pen Drive, Flash Cards etc. )
Now, the fastest of all is the system cache which is fabricated into the processor. This is used to fetch and receive instructions which are to be executed by the processor. This is done with the help of RAM. RAM will hold the efective address of the instruction to be executed. This address in found in different forms ranging from systems to systems. Some use EDBC / Hexa-Format etc. The point is... RAM works as a middle memory manager to send and receive instructions / interrupts from system cache to motherboard there by, enhancing the performance of the overall system.
If you are getting confused, don't be because it's not a rocket science !!! Its quiet simple. If you want a better systems and a fast killer machine, i would suggest you to get a Good procesor Like Intel Core 2 Duo with 800 FSB DDR2 RAM and a good 7200 RPM HDD. Also, check the latest motehrboards from Intel - They really are classic example for killer machines...
Regards,
KaZi. !

RAM stands for Random Access Memory. Your computer has has this inside and uses it to store programs it is currently running as well as the information being used by that program.
For example, when you start Microsoft Word, the computer loads the program from the hard disk into RAM. When you open a document, it too is read from the hard disk and loaded into RAM.
The more RAM a computer has, the less it has to read from and write to the slower hard disk and the faster the computer will be.
Most modern computers running Windows XP will need at least 512 MB (Megabytes). 1 or 2 GB (Gigabytes) is better.

RAM is Random Access Memory. RAM is the area where your computer stores programs that you are currently running and data that you are currently working on.
RAM can be contrasted with disk storage. Disk storage holds all of your programs and all of your data -- whether you are working with them or not. When you turn off your computer, the contents of RAM instantly disappear, but the contents of your disk storage remain unharmed.
RAM is also sometimes contrasted with ROM. ROM (Read Only Memory) are memory chips which have had information stored on them which cannot be changed. Your motherboard may contain some ROM chips.

It stands for Random Access Memory(RAM).
It is a primary memory where during the computer processing, the data comes first into this drive and is then sent to the hard-disk drive.
You should have a good amt of RAM capacity installed into ur pc.
bye.

Random Access Memory. When you input a command, the memory knows where it is stored and goes directly to it... instead of reading through the entire disc to get to where it is.
