My neighbor asked me to teach her son how to search for books and information as effectively as possible. I understand he said he doesnt know how.

Well, although I think the answer is pretty obvious, I'd like to narrow it down to a few main things and go down the list so that I can teach him and then give them all the list so that the whole family knows how to search for books and information.

How would you structure such a training session?

A tour of the library with a scavenger hunt list is a good idea. You can explain how the library works by showing him each section. He can feel successful when he finds a few books on certain subjects. You can make a short list that asks him to find a book about cars, spiderman, the President and other things that would either interest him, or help him in preparing for school.

As for helping the rest of the family, it may be best to bring them along too. This way they can gain a basic understanding. I do not think that a list of instructions can be as helpful here. You could possibly show them how it works by looking online. My library has a web site and you can reserve books from home and then pick them up when you go.

This training session may be hard to do especially if the library is crowded. Are you going to take him to the adult or childrens section of the library? Most of the public libraries have their holdings listed online or in a computer database but some others have a card catalogue.

If it is on a computer, then take the child to the children's section and show him all of the books and let him browse the shelves. He may find something during that initial stage that he likes. Ask him what topics he is interested in and let him type it into the search engine and then have him write down the call number and last 3 digits of the authors name and show him the section he needs to be looking in and have him locate it himself but be close to him incase he gets confused or cannot find it.

But how old is he? If he is in school, then I would imagine that he has been to the library in is school and has had a mini lesson on what the library is all about and has been taught how to search for a book. He may truly not know how to look for a book or maybe he does and just wants someone else to find a book for him.

The best way to teach that would be to go to the library and do it. Ask him a couple of favorite subjects on the way, show him how to type it into the search engine, and find the book. Have him find books on another subject he mentioned. Stay right with him so if he has questions you can easily talk him through it.

Learning by doing is usually the most effective way. Good luck
