Just to clarify for the berk below this has nothing to do with race. I am in no way racist. I mean all aspects of life. For instance a primary school head has just banned mother's day cards so any children without mothers will not be offended. Also if it's not meant to be a democratic society what the hell is it meant to be ?

Britain is not a democracy and never has been what we have is an elected oligarchy. Voting for Tweedle Dum or Tweedle Dee every five years is not democracy.

The UK is a democracy in the sense that we have elected representatives in power making the decisions on policies for which we have voted. However, the bunch of politicians we've got now seem to listen to the most strident voices and those come from the PC brigade.
In a true democracy there would have to be a referendum on every single act of parliament. That is impractical, so we have elected politicians.

Of course we do - as much as it is possible to within a monarchy.
Democracy is indeed an ideal and therefore nobody will ever get it perfect. I am reminded of a friend of mine who is from the former Yugoslavia. In 1997 she wrote to me saying she was amazed at the way John Major stood down like such a gentleman after Labour won our election. I wrote back stating that the poor fool didn't have a lot of choice. Then she told me about how she and her fellow citizens had had to march through the streets and suffer bloodshed to get their crooked leader out for good.
For me, that was something to be appalled at - I was disgusted that the people had ever had to do that in the first place. For my friend, who had never experienced democracy, the victory was something to be celebrated.
The moral of this little tale being: we should be glad that we do indeed still live in relative freedom, and make the most of it.

Last time I looked, we weren't being forced to share everything we own or being COMPLETELY dictated to by The Powers That Be.
The problem with democracy is that, like any other political system, it is an ideal. You therefore should expect more than a few complications when it's applied in reality. A wonderful ideal it may be, but an ideal nonetheless.

We've never lived in a democracy. Read up on your political history. And it seems to me that you are trying to stir up some kind of hatred. Why is that, I wonder? Personal issues, hmm?

Wise words mate. I am at present traveling round Europe. I called into Gibratar on passing and it was the first place I was told "You can't do that!" There are so many rules and regulations even the regulators hands are tied.
