Soap and detergent are actually slightly different things, and using unaltered soap instead of dishwashing liquid (which is a detergent) will leave a slight film over everything.

There's a dishwashing liquid recipe on this site:
http://www.homemakingcottage.com/clean/cleaners.html

It uses soap flakes (if you can't find them, you can always grate your own from pure bar soap - like Ivory), but the lemon essential oil should help cut the film.
