Everyone is capable of violence. Although I'm a pacifist, I would certainly defend myself if attacked.
But beyond that, we all have certain things that will trigger us. My grandfather is the most gentle man I've ever known, but it's entirely possible he would kill someone if he caught them abusing a child.

Darn tootin! Especially if they were threatening my family.
And I have no issue with a person defending themself.
If no one is in physical danger, I'm all for leaving the situation. But sometimes, force is necessary to protect one's self and loved ones.
