i know i need a new battery, but i have to get the car started in order to drive 200 miles home to get it! i just want to know if i 'wasted' the charge the battery had managed to accumulate from the charger, by trying the car, and it not having charged enough to start.

You have a dead Battery.

If it's possible, get a jump start. These issues are determined by a number of factors. The last advice you received was true..you can take it typically to any autozone or checker to get the whole system checked...even napa and carquest should do it for free......if your way out there, but have a charger...but nothing else, check the fluid levels in your battery...if it is an older battery. Most newer batteries are sealed, and thus not meant to be tampered with.. if the cap(s) will pop off.. fill them with bottled water, and charge. If the charge wont hold, you'll need in the least a jump, if not a whole new battery.

Either you don't have good connection or you need a new battery.

I have purchased Batts for twenty at the scrap yard, that's cheaper than driving the 200 mi. Unless you KNOW why it is stone dead (left a light on etc.) you should check that the alternator is WORKING before driving it 200 mi. Or it will only run until the Battery is dead again......

most auto places will test your battery for free, or you can buy a Hydrometer about 5 bucks, take off the cell covers on the battery, dip in the "Hydrometer", looks like a turkey baster, and if all the balls float at about the same level for ea. cell tested, the battery is GOOD, if the balls sink on any cell after you test it, the cell is bad, and the battery is No Good,
