1 week
jeez how do some people get away with giving you wrong answers above.
you can self certify for the 1st 7 days (1 week) after which you need a sick note from the doctor.
you qualify for Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) afer 3 days, although other periods off within a certain time frame count as the same illness for SSP so will qualify from day 1.

After the third day of being off sick you will need to see your doctor and see if he/she see's fit to write you a sick note, if he/she doesnt then you will not be able to prove to your employer that you are suffering from any kind of condition that stops you working and may have to consider taking the rest of the time off unpaid, and after too long you may have to face diciplinery action when you do return to work.
Remember sick days are not extended holidays and sick pay is always paid at the companys discretion, so its not guaranteed, you may want to consult your company handbook and read the section on sick leave as in some companys if you havent been there for a certain period of time then you may not even qualify for sick pay.
Hope this helps

The first 3 days you don't qualify for sick pay but you're still supposed to self certify that you've been off. On the 4th day of sickness, and any after, you require a sicknote if you wish to get SSP when in my employment.

It depends on your company policy. In my company if you are out sick for 3 days or more then you need a note (although I believe the company can legally ask for a doctor's letter after even just one sick day).
