Hi everybody,

I would like to start taking the birth control injection, Depo-Provera and would like to know if anybody here uses or has used it? What was your experience with it? Any side-effects? I've read about it from the internet but would like info from anyone who can uses/has used it.

Thanks

I thought it was the greatest thing ever until I got a bone density test.

Now I'm 25 and I have full blown osteoporosis.

Hi,
I was on the shot for three years. I had no major side affects except slight weight gain and no cycle. However when I went off it took 2 years to get a regular cycle and then it was so out of wack the doctor had to put me on the pill to regulate my cycles. Also if you think that you may want to come off the depo and start trying to have a baby, you will probably have to wait a year or two before you will ovulate again. The shot is a good birth control, but women have gotten pregnat while taking it.

i was on depo for 2 years and in that time put on 20 kg in weight! I loved not having to remember to take the pill and that i din't have a period in all that time was great . But it did cause me mood swings, and if your thinking of having a baby in the next couple of years i would advice against it as it can take 6-18 months for your periods to get back to normal. If it wasn't for the weight gain (it made me feel very hungry all the time) i would have stayed on it. Hope this helps

I no longer use it as for I do not have use any longer. I did use it and I gained some weight with it. But of course it made it very nice with out taking those pills everyday. Then I did not take it for a long time again. When I took it the second time around I lost weight. But you still might have slight bleeding from time to time , but nothing to worry about. I would recommed to get it. I never had nothing negative side affects for me.

The responses make me laugh...

The side effects are headaches, weight gain (alot of meds supposedly cause weight gain). My doc. also told me Wednesday that it causes some bone loss, but so does ageing.

I just started on Depo Wednesday and was previuosly on it for 7 years..I love love love it. Most people stop getting their period and you have to wait about a year or so to start trying to get pregnant (after your period cycles noramlly). Good luck!

Used it for four years and hated it. After five years you need a bone density check as it royally screws up your bone health.

I gained a lot of weight, got really moody, had NO sex drive, and spotted at the strangest times.

I would never recommend the shot to anyone.

I bled every day and ended up having to take a pill everyday just to stop the bleeding. I also put on a lot of weight. I think it disrupted my cycle, which has never returned to normal. I went off it 7 years ago!

My cousin has used it since it came out and she LOVES it. She doesn't have any side effects from it either. But by the time it came out, she'd already had her one daughter and didn't want more, so she was not concerned about whether or not it had side effects on having babies in the future.

I personally use Yasmin. But that is because I am severely PMDD, so my choices are Yasmin or Yasmin. LOL

hi i would advise against it. i had it in the march and you dont have to have it for another three months after that but i felt so ill on it i didnt go back and i didnt have a period for a whole year so it goes to show how long it stays in the body. i put on weight and if it doesnt agree with you theirs nothing you can do. also it depends if you want more children as its in your body so long after that fertility can be delayed....... hope this gives you both sides of the story as not everyone is the same
