Perhaps it's lot easier to contact a religious organization for a temporay shelter - you could assist in the local upkeep activities and may run into other contacts also - assuming that you are going there on legitimate business - not as a refugee.

If you can afford it there are probably many YMCA or youth hostels or paying guest arrangements too - depends upon your needs and resources.
I am sure if you are going to England, you do not want to contact an American Embassy.

I think that you are playing on dangerous grounds. It's risky. Stay around the people you are coming to England for.
