Sorry to disillusion you about us Americans but not much is mandatory in our country other than paying taxes. The average person is "asked" to recycle, no fines imposed for not doing so. Big industries such as hospitals, schools, major companies- they do not have to recycle---you know why, $$ costs too much to sort the garbage. No the US is basically recycling by conscious choice of the individual....which is sad and is NOT fair to the rest of the world.

In my neighborhood 1 out of 8 people recycle. Eye guess not as many people do it because they get cash. Wouldn't it be nice if you got something different like some nice cosmetics. Common! Eyed go if I knew I could come home with some nice concealer, or some mascara, or a new compact that has a little mirror with some foundation.

Many do. I would say that much of it is state-driven here. For example, Californians are very recycling-savvy. But, (and any New Jersey-ans please correct me if things have changed) when I was traveling in New Jersey 3 years ago, I was shocked at how much styrofoam I saw everywhere (including in the streets). Hawaiians are very concerned about the environment. It just depends I think, on the locality.

There are many people throughout the world who feel the way you do.
Unfortunately, there are just as many who don't.
