I used to love The Secret World of Alex Mack! I also liked Are You Afraid of the Dark, Clarissa Explains it All and whatever else they used to show on SNICK.

Sounds like "The Busy World of Richard Scarry." The worm driving the apple was Lowly Worm. I never watched the show, but I used to read all of the Richard Scarry books when I was a kid. Some of my other favorite characters were Huckle Cat, Sgt. Murphy, Mr. Frumble, and Mr. Fixit.
