Women trying to get pregnant should only drink 1 or 2 units of alcohol, once or twice a week. As soon as you know you're pregnant it's recommended to quit drinking altogether until you're in the second trimester, when it is then again recommended no more than 1 or 2 units a week maximum as alcohol can pass to the baby through the placenta and affect the baby's development. We're told to avoid altogether in the trimester as this is when the baby is developing most rapidly. As an alternative to wine you could try sparkling grape juice. If you're worried friends will wonder why you're not drinking try telling them you're on antibiotics or detoxing, remember to limit your caffeine intake to no more than 300mg a day too.

None. I've often heard a glass a wine a day is ok, but studies show that they don't know how much is too much to cause Fetal Alchol Syndrome.

When a pregnant woman drinks alcohol, so does her unborn baby. There is no known safe amount of alcohol to drink while pregnant and there also does not appear to be a safe time to drink during pregnancy either. Therefore, it is recommended that women abstain from drinking alcohol at any time during pregnancy.

Foetal alcohol syndrome does not occur through a couple of glasses per week this is regular daily drinking throughout pregnancy. Government guidlines suggest to limit alcohol to 1-2 units no more than twice per week and not added together.
125ml wine =1unit
half pint lager or cider =1unit
25ml spirit=1unit
I am 19 weeks pregnant and have the occasional small glass of red but do always feel guilty and let m husband finish rest off.

well i didnt drink at all during my pregnancy. I think that you can live without it for 9 months. I sure made up for it after i finished breast feeding!!! It was well worth the wait. I appreciated that my baby was well and was really proud that i had done the best thing for my baby. If anything did happen to your baby, It wouldnt be your fault if you only have a few glasses of wine during the pregnancy. But you would still blame yourself i suspect. Stay healthy and good luck.

"The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists recently conducted a large study including 400,000 American women, all of whom had consumed alcohol during pregnancy. Not a single case of fetal alcohol syndrome occurred and no adverse effects on children were found when consumption was under 8.5 drinks per week. 3

A recent review of research studies found that fetal alcohol syndrome only occurs among alcoholics. The evidence is clear that there is no apparent risk to a child when the pregnant woman consumes no more than one drink per day. 4"

I, uh, think it might be a bit much to try and test that too conclusively, though.

The British gov't advises no more than two units of alcohol per week; I think that's a pretty reasonable guideline for the first trimester.

I just finished reading an article on this in Women's Day (old issue) at the Doctors and a woman drank 2 glasses wine every day of her pregnancy and gave birth to a seriously handicapped child, so I guess 1 glass every other day would be safe enough. Why don't you Google Fetal Alcohol Syndrome?

Scientists still don't know the exact answer to that one because there aren't too many pregnant women willing to be guinea pigs to see how alcohol affects their baby. It is possible even one drink could cause harm, but if you are stressing over it, it's probably OK to have one and be done with it. My suggestion would be to not drink during pregnancy.

They say that the first trimester is the worst possible time to drink anything. This is the time where the fetal alcohol syndrome can develop. So if your going to have some wine try and wait until your at least in your 2nd trimester.

I would say none!!

My son had a heart problem when he was born - I didn't drink or smoke when I was pregnant, but certainly spent many hours sitting by his hospital bed/cot, watching him wired up to machines and blaming myself for something I might have done whilst I was pregnant. It's not worth it!!

most midwives/ doctors advise that you don't drink any alcohol whilst pregnant, although other research suggests that 1 unit of alcohol a day is ok during pregnancy. i'm 15 weeks pregnant and personally i have chosen not to drink any during this pregnancy, i don't want to risk anything.
