I don't know if you have heard of a cordless impact drill driver, but I use one to do similar jobs as you have described. They can drive a 3 1/2 " screw with no problem into pine joists. They are also hand for drywall too, and relatively inexpensive. I bought a craftsman one in a kit and it performed well. They sell for around a 100 bucks or so. For more power check out a Dewalt but they are also more pricey. Just depends on how much you plan on using it.

Are you going to buy this nailer just for this one job? If so, I would look at less expensive alternatives. This tool is about $300-$400 and if your going to use it sparingly, then I would purchase a combo kit of tools, at least you would have more than just one tool and they would have more uses and be more versitale the just that nailer. Maybe see if Home Depot rents this tool? You could buy a compressor and framing nailer for what you paid for the cordless nailer and use the compressor to put air in your tires, paint, work on your car, all the differnent types of nailers could be used for different projects. So your options are greater and tool will have a more versitile use.

You need a framing nailer, a finisher or trimmer would be a waste of time and money with the project you are doing.

If your sistering joists you definately don`t want to use a trim gun. You`re looking for a framing gun. Check your dimensions though, you may not fit the nailer in the void.
