Yes, you can burn CDs on a dual layer DVD burner.

I have two DVD burners, a single layer and a dual layer. Both burn CDs, CD/RW, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW without any problem. They also copy CD to CD.

A word of advice; don't use cheap DVD blanks or CDs for that matter. It isn't worth the hassle and waste of time making coasters. I use Verbatim or a brand named Zero. I have a failure rate of about 1 in 200 with either brand.

Your burner should have come with Nero7 or some other burning software. Nero has options to burn CD's and DVDs, both single and DL.
