We don't worry too much about snow. Our problem here where I live is ice. It rains and then freezes, and these country roads turn into skating rinks. A van carrying the girl's basketball team from one town over tried to go to a game after an ice storm, and the coach lost control, flipped, and killed one of the girls. So, the schools will open late and allow for absences if there is ice, but snow is pretty much ignored.

I live in a hilly rural area so schools tend to close at about three inches of snow. Less if icing of the roads is involved, the buses have to go on twisted roads and the increased liability keeps them off the road. When I lived in a flat, urban area where the kids walked to school, it took six or more inches and had to be snowing during school hours, and not ended before school started. That was mostly due to the fact that the teachers had to travel.

I guess you are English like me .
Its always been the same , never mind the US, any where else in Europe where they sometimes get !!! FEET !!! of snow they just sweep it to one side and get on with life .
Here if we get just a few inches everything stops and people even die .
I don't now the answer to this other than maybe the councils should spend a bit of money for the appropriate machinery

Good point. The media put a little bit of snow completely out of perspective - we get a couple of centimetres and suddenly we are experiencing 'Arctic' weather conditions.... as if!
God help us if we ever do have Arctic weather.
We just need to look at Scandinavia and the US to see how people should cope with snow - they just get on with it. Good for them!

No, we're not that pathetic. I blew two feet of snow out of my driveway and went to work. Some of the schools were closed for the safety of the children.
