"The telescope first appeared in the Netherlands. In October 1608, the national government in The Hague discussed a patent application for a device that aided "seeing faraway things as though nearby." It consisted of a convex and concave lens in a tube. The combination magnified objects three or four times. "

The first refracting telescope was invented by Hans Lippershey in 1608. Lippershey (1570?-1619) was a German-born Dutch lens maker who demonstrated the first refracting telescope in 1608, made from two lenses; he applied for a patent for this optical refracting telescope (using 2 lenses) in 1608, intending it for use as a military device.

Its origins are not clear, but Hans Lippershey and Jacob Metius applied for a patent on the telescope (which was denied) around 1608. Galileo made better telescopes and was the first to use one to look at things in the sky, in 1610.

Lenses have been around since the First Century CE. All that was needed was the experience of seeing the magnifying power of a drop of water and the technology to make reasonably clear glass. The word "lens" comes from the Latin "lentil" ("bean"), because of its ovoid shape.

Late in the 16th Century, Hans and Zaccharias Janssen got the idea to put two or more lenses together in a line and discovered the compound microscope. Galileo took the discovery and pointed it in another direction.
