I mean, in our Liberal/Democrat/Conservative/Republican splits? I see people here every day accusing the other side of stupidity and evil to a hysterical level (and I mean that as in "hysteria," not "humor"). Couldn't we Americans get more done if we recognized that fellow Americans who disagree with us are not necessarily the enemy? Is it even possible for us to relearn this point of view?

Your point is well taken. But Americans are justifiably angry at the Republican administration's dishonesty about the Iraq war. I would not want to "call a truce" if it meant letting up the pressure against Bush and his loyalists to tell us the truth about Iraq from the beginning.

I do believe the country is uniting, however. Against Bush. Just because there are many anti-social conservatives posting here (and a few liberals of course) , don't forget that.

The problem lies in the fact that both sides do not want to work bi-partisan. Thus the reason for the splits. When you have political parties with their own special agendas, they're going to pursue them vigorously.

I personally believe in the elimination of political parties, and have a non-partisan government. The Founding Fathers intended for this country to have representatives who voted laws based upon the will of the people. What we have are politicians who tell Americans what they think they want to hear, to bend the polls in their favor and hopefully con their way into office. Once in office, they do not represent the people who placed them there, neither do they consider the will of those constituents. They do what THEY want, and spend what THEY want.

When conservatives are in control, they do as they please. Now that the Liberals are in control, they will undo what the Conservatives did, and implement their agendas.

Any American who thinks our government officials represent us are living some kind of a pipe dream. They neither represent us, nor care for us. They place themselves and their own ambitions before the will of the people and the nation.

I don't see this ever changing without some radical overhaul of our current system.

Best wishes!

Haha conservatives will have to sway liberally whether they like it or not, seeing as society is constantly becoming more liberal and they can't keep their conservative platform and make the public happy at the same time. But apparently the southerners have a strong hold on religious, conservative views so we'll see.

I have an extremely difficult time dealing with/compromising with left-wingers who simultaneously base their view of constitutional law on sophistry while they also are completely confident that their view of constitutional law is settled and irrevocable.

For example, a couple of months ago here on Y!A I saw some guy proclaim that when Congress added the words "under God" to the pledge of allegiance, that was a "subversive attempt to mix church and state." I chewed that guy out! I said that "I hate you people. I wish you'd leave this country!"

There are too many left-wingers who rest easily in their comfortable confidence that most of their views about "human rights" are guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution and are thus not open to debate or compromise. And since they feel that they don't have to compromise with me, I won't try to be nice and gentlemanly with them.

Sure it's possible, even if it comes down to merely being bipartisan because there is no other choice with a majority of one political mindset calling the shots.

As for the rest of us, all we are saying, is give peace a chance.

Yes it would be good to at least have a ceasefire, but I don't expect to see it any time soon. It takes 1 to make war but 2 to make peace. I don't see 1 side in particular being willing to make peace. I won't name that side, but I think many on this board can guess what I mean.

I don't want to stop being enemies with liberals.

This would give a tacit implication that their views are somehow acceptable.
