I want to optimize my web pages so that our homepage will rank high in Google!. Many of our web pages require password to log in. If I only want the homepage to rank high, can I just optimize 10 or 20 pages that have meaningful content, or I should optimize 100+ web pages? Among those 100+ web pages, some of them are just sign in page, forgot password page.

Will I boost my web homepage ranking by optimize more pages? or it doesn't make any difference?

Just optimize the pages with meaningful content.

Try to add one or two pages a week with additional meaningful content.

Forget about PageRank and concentrate on providing quality content and obtaining on topic inbound links.

Don't do what Oren suggested "...use the rel-"nofollow" attribute to prevent your page rank from leaking to other websites" as Adam Lasnik from Google Search has just advised against it in Google Groups.

Content plays a big role in optimization. Notice all the sites that have pagerank of 5 and higher are usually rich in content. Pages like LOGIN and similar do not contribute much to your rank hoever they cannot hurt you. It is best to optimizae each page individually including META TAGS, TITLE (very important) and body text. Pay attention to keyword density and make sure Google is able to recognize dominant phrases and keywords that repeat. Also use

header tags for titles. Search engines love these.

My suggestion to you is to concentrate on 20 quality pages and optimize them the best way you can. Also use the rel-"nofollow" attribute to prevent your page rank from leaking to other websites. Example: Click Here

Good luck!
Oren.
