Hi, recently I got a job as a developer, and they gave me this project that I'm doing right now, but noone comes and asks me how's it goig, except maybe every week or something. I'm still new at this job, but should I give them a report of the progress I made so that they won't take it for granted or what??

Dear Disco Girl,

Succeeding as a software developer requires more than just coding skills. I have worked for software development companies & realise that the main reason why projects fail is the lack of planning and poor management.

I can see that you are a new developer. I can understand how difficult this is for you especially if you have no experience or have never worked in a software development company before.

Starting a career in software development is not easy. You have a lot to learn. Even the easiest task might take much more than expected.

You should not give up easily. The job you hold now will open opportunities for you to apply to bigger / more organised software companies. You gain real experience from learning the methodologies of those senior developers. (although I have seen lots of developers who have been coding for over 10 years and havent learned much)

Usually it is best to have several people working on a project even if its small.

I suggest you you keep a record of what you are working on a daily basis. When you face a problem, report it as soon as possible. Your biggest foe is vague requirements.

Hope I helped.

maybe when they gave you the job they were confident that you were able to just get on with it and didnt need supervision of too much support. if you are worried or strugglig however make sure you talk to someone that way u can work out an appropriate level of support before things get too stressful.

there is nothing stopping u from doing your weekly/monthly progress reports - these will be a useful aid to you to see where you are adn what needs doing, as well ad having something to present to your emplyers if they ever askor you have an appraisal of some sort. that will show you are capable of self-management.

good luck
X

This sounds like its excellent training for a government job, you are so on your way .... likely they either think you know what your doing, or the nicest person you have met is hoping you totally thunder in, because they applied for the project and didn't get it. I'd make sure I was checking the bank account every so often if I were you. Good Luck.

Yeah, it's always a good idea to report back even if no one seems to care. It shows respect to your bosses as well as evidence of your hard work. You should feel lucky that you don't have a boss on your back all of the time. Keep it that way by keeping them informed and they'll have no reason to pester you.
