From what I understand, the makeup of a group dates back to the old Everquest Model.
First you have a Tank. The Tank takes the point, he should be knowledgeable in how to attract aggro (getting the enemies angry at him) and he should have enough armor to survive the beating he is going to take. For the Tank, you are looking at a Warrior, Palidan or a Duid (in bear form), they all have high armor and abilities that generate aggro.
Behind the Tank, you will have the Healer. If all goes right, the Healer will be responsible for keeping the Tank alive (optimal scenarios have the Tank being the only person getting beat on). For a Healer, you are looking at a Priest, Druid (in caster form), Palidans (who are NOT Tanking) or Shamans.
Next you will have the Damage Dealers (or DPS). These are the ones who will actually do the killing. They need to be able to do a ton of damage WITHOUT attracting aggro. They come in two varieties:
- Melee Damage Dealers: Rogues, Shaman, Warriors (who are not Tanking), Druids (in cat form)
- Ranged Damage Dealers: Mages, Hunters, Warlocks, Shaman
As I said before, the Tank should be able hold the enemies attention and be the only one taking damage. Unfortunately, this does not always happen. In the event you have an enemy get angry at one of the Damage Dealers or the Healer, the will run past the Tank and try to attack them. For that, you have the Off-Tank. The Off-Tank is usually acting as a Melee Damage Dealer, but when an enemy tries to run past the Tank, the Off-Tank will attack him, pull him back to the Tank and allow the Tank to re-engage him. For an Off-Tank, you are looking at a Warrior or Shaman.
There are other roles as you get to the advanced instances and need more sophisticated tactics.
You may be looking for Crowd Control (CC), where you need someone who can remove an enemy from the fight for a period of time which will allow the group to concentrate their firepower. Mages (who can Polymorph), Rogues (who can Sap) or Hunters (with the Ice Trap) work here.
Hunters are also adept at pulling enemies away from their normal positions to allow a group to isolate them. This is usually a job for the Tank (since he is ready for opponents to attack him) but a smart Hunter works due to his ability to survive in the event of unexpected additions (Hunters can Feign Death and shed all of their aggro).

There might be better answers than mine, but a good group has at least a tank, a damage dealer, and a healer.
Tanks are characters that can take a lot of damage. Hopefully the targets attack the tank, and not the other classes who have less armor and are more likely to die. Good tanks are warriors, paladins, and druids in bear form. Hunter pets can also be ok tanks. The tank should use a shield instead or a two handed weapon.
Damage dealers do a lot of damage. Rogues, mages, and warlocks all fit in here.
Healers, well, heal. Priests and non-tanking Pallys are the best healers, just make sure to keep them alive because they can resurrect anyone.
I'm not too familiar with shamans, but they seem great for a group because of the totems. And hunters are great for solo play, but I'm not sure what niche they fill in a group.
Have fun experimenting with different combinations. All of the classes add something, just try not to have more than one healer and tank.

The best combination would depend really on what you want. But I'll give you a good suggestion. A mage, warrior, priest/druid. The 4th one is all your choice, but it would be best to get someone like a shaman or a paladin because they can give "buffs" ( a temporary spell that helps, such as giving more life or armor, of course there are a larger range). Paladins can give buffs that are really beneficial that can last 5 minutes before you have to recast them. Shamans give buffs that are short duration, exception of a few, that come from totems that they drop and they give temperary buffs, best to use a few seconds before getting into a battle or during. So your choices for the best would be, a mage, who can do something called "polymorph" making the unit unable to act (cast spells or melee/ranged attacks) a warrior is needed to take all the damage so the other people in your group don't, a priest/druid are needed to heal your other teammates so they don't die, and your class class if you were to choose either a shaman/paladin are for support mainly with their buffs and weak heals. If you weren't to choose a shaman/paladin for your 4th person, then you should get a dps class of either a warlock ( that is what I recommend the most) a rogue, hunter, another mage, or warriors that use two handed weapons to deal damage (warriors who are "tanks" should always use a one handed weapon and a shield to deal some damage and block/reduce damage taken with a shield). If anything else, ask me in game I guess
Realm:Burning Legion. Character:Analinda, level 62.
Realm:Smolderthorn. Character:Fueron, level 67.

Well this can go 2 ways, do you want the strategy answer or you talking for lvling. For strategy I would choose a Pally/war, a mage/rogue, a priest, and a hunter/lock. As for lvling the best grp is 2 mages and a priest. One mage fire spec the other frost, and the priest holy spec. If you had to had a 4th I would choose druid since it is a very versatile class and can fit in where it is needed. The reason I tell you 2 mages and a priest isn't personal preference it is the group that so far has the fastest lvling in game yet. And as for taking on hard bosses, there was a Korean 4 man grp that cleared MC with 2 mages, priest and druid. If you keep that grp you will be an unstoppable force.

If I had to choose 4 characters, I'd pick a warrior, mage, druid/shaman and a healing paladin.
The warrior takes the damage and has all of the focus. He's the spear point of your group. He has to be good at what he does, willing to use his shield and pay attention to the critters.
A mage is a good magical damage dealer, and has the crowd control abillity of sheeping. Able to buff the group with a few neat things, provide food and water, and issue some serious smackdown.
A druid/shaman can do good melee damage, substitute on the fly if the tank dies, and play backup healer as needed. Totems, Mark of the Wild... all good group buffs. These flexible classes are always, always always useful.
I've found that I prefer my healing paladin as the main healer for small groups, over a priest. A paladin generates less aggro for their healing, and can take a few good solid hits if the creatures do decide to focus on him. With Flash of Light and gear focused for healing (Intellect and +heal) a paladin can heal until doomsday if need be. OOM is rarely an issue with a good paladin healer. The different auras and blessings that a paladin can provide are good for the group.
Whatever you decide on will be good for your group, so long as you have fun. You can always recruit a 5th person for instance runs, there's always a rogue or hunter or warlock on LFG.

There is a chat channel on World of Warcraft specifically for forming groups. It is called LookingforGroup. While playing enter '/join LookingForGroup' and you will join the channel. You will see messages from everyone looking for form a group for specific quests. Groups form and disband rapidly. People will some together, finish a quest or two, then go their separate ways. Sometimes, if the group is successful enough, longstanding, recurring partnerships may form where individuals can save each others names in their Friend's List and team up more often (Maybe even go as far as form a guild). So you should not have much problems joining a group

Just my opinion of a good mix of 4 characters.
1. A warrior. Good to hold the aggro (take damage) while the other people remain unharmed.
2. A priest. They can heal, buff (increase your stats for a certain amount of time) and also do decent damage.
3. A rogue. Rogues are great at dealing damage, opening chests, picking locks, and everyone loves a rogue!
4a. A shaman. Shaman can use totems to boost party stats, they can heal, and also resurrect along with the priest.
4b. A mage. Mages are incredible at CC (crowd control), and doing damage to large groups of mobs (monsters). They can also conjure up food and water for the group.
