The best method to clean either a desktop keyboard or a laptop attached keyboard is to use any form of liquid which does not transfer current. I recommend you unplug the keyboard if it's from a desktop immediately, if it is attached to a notebook, turn it off immediately and take the battery out. Turn it upside down to try to drain any left over liquid for about 24 hours. After that time wipe away any liquid if it's visible with a dry cloth. Blow dry it for about another 10-20 mins.

You could try some light cleaning, with the keyboard still in the laptop, TAKE YOUR BATTERY OUT. Q-tips probably won't do much but for the surface, the gause pad idea might work. Maybe some card stock (though its not to absorbent) wet a little bit with alcohol and slide it in the cracks between the keys get an angle on it so it gets more contact in there. Or how about a credit card (something thin and stiff) with a baby wipe pulled around it? for sure don't try to take the keyboard apart to clean it there are hundreds of these rubber things that go everywhere, you will never find them all (don't ask how I know that :) but if the contaminant has made it to the inside of the keyboard (most probably the case), then its not looking good, overtime it will just get worse as the contaminant evaporates and leaves just a sticky sugar mess that will eventually harden. if you can remove the keyboard and soak it in denatured alcohol or such it may help. You could try spraying it with electrical contact cleaner. But in all those cases it needs to be dry before you put it back in. And don’t spray it while it is still inside the laptop. While the stuff does evaporate it can pool up and also move the contaminate to new places. And it will take a long time to dry if you get liquid inside the keyboard itself. when you think is dry wait longer And its way easier to get the contaminant in the keyboard than back out. before you do anything extreme make sure you have a source to buy another keyboard.
If your good at fixing things you can replace the keyboard. I've done it a few times on different brands, some were easy
(replaceable from the top) others were terribly difficult had to take the entire laptop apart. you may be able to get another from the manufacturer, but probably cheaper from a parts/ supply house. Just do a search for your laptop model number add replacement and or parts to the end of your search. maybe find a broken one or parts on ebay
Also if your not that crafty and don’t want to pay someone else to fix it,
Just get a regular desktop keyboard and plug it in and use it instead. A USB keyboard might be a better choice since the round PS/2 types, your system should be off, to plug and unplug it, or you can risk damage to your motherboard.
They also make portable keyboards some that are rollable some that are foldable. Some are waterproof. The rubber rollable kind have to be used on a hard surface so you cant lean back with the keyboard in your lap, but they are quiet.

Yes I agree with Thomas, shut down your laptop and unplug. Use some rubbing alcohol because it evaporates quickly, you don't want to use water unless you want to wait forever for it to dry.
But yeah get a gauze pad and some qtips and go to work on it. Just make sure it is completely dry before you turn it one, you don't wan't to short anything out.

this is simple to fix just disconnect, turn this down, and remove any remained coffee with a dry cloth!! Wait for some time to reconnect it again. It happened to me once i did the steps mentioned above and everything was OK, to avoid this type of accident i bought an easy and cool coffee mug this thing is sealed and when it falls there is not even a drop of coffee, beer, etc! I hope it helps ;-) Thanks
