Yes, I was diagnosed with a serious progressive disease in 1985. I was just getting used to this when my husband was diagnosed with cancer in 1986 and sadly died in 1987.
I was left with a 12-year-old and a nine-year old and because of them it made it both harder and easier to rebuild our lives. We had the help of family and friends and without them we wouldn't have made it.
It's amazing what you can do when other people's lives also depend on it.

Yes just over a year ago I was in refuge as my husband was violent and I left him,
I have 2 older children and a baby,I moved 200 miles away and left everything up north.
I got rehoused after a few months with the most amazing house,
I declared bankruptcy
I started learning to drive
I filed for divorce
And I took my children on holiday
When we left him we had a bag of clothes each, and now a year later I have just passed my driving test, bought a car and my daughters are really settled.I've also just begun my Open University course.

I have lost track of the times I have had to rebuild, right now at the age of 54 going through another one, while there is a breath in your body you have the power to rebuild, never lay down and die only when it,s the end and you have no choice. Keep fighting the good fight.

Uhm, yip. Started from scratch at least twice. Once was after my and my partner split up. That was tough, because everything changed and I also lost my job at the same time.
The second time was in 2005 when, after 6 months working as a journo in Cape Town, I decided to stay. That meant: going back to Holland, get rid of flat, sell all my stuff ( of everything I had, I have about 4 boxes left), saying goodbye to friends, and dealing with all kinds of bureaucratic sh*t.
It was quite emotional, despite the fact that I wanted to move to / stay in SA. I had to start from scratch with regards to findinf a job, with regards to find and redecorate my house ( as I had sold and got rid of everything I owned), etc.

Yes, I grew up in a nice house and had nice things. When I was 16 my mother was murdered, within 3 months both her parents died and my life changed forever. My dad met someone else and she didn't like me so threw me out. I went from living in comfort to living in rooms and stinking bedsits, I tried suicide as I had never felt so alone. I realised I had to do something with my life and gave myself a good kick up the a***!!!! I got a good job and worked my way up to management level, although life hasn't been easy I got through it and think I'm a much better person for my experiences.
I got married last year and we are trying for a baby. I think bad things that happen to us in life are just lessons, some of us have harder ones than others, but always remember that there is always someone worse off than you are, count your blessings, keep loved ones close and always have respect for yourself.

I lost my job and my house (after 10 years of payments) in 1987. I have a wonderful, supportive wife and together we rebuilt our lives without any help from anyone.
We now own our own house again and have a very good joint income and have put our daughter through university. She is now a solicitor.
Nobody helped us. No-one. I can tell you that I seldom fritter money on rubbish - I like to have money in the bank!

I had to restart everything, It was really hard at the time, but in retrospect, I made a big deal out of it because when I was going through those things there was a lot of fear, y'know?
Yeah, I think most people have to re-invent themselves in someways. I just had to hit a wall to do it.

Several times, and it's never easy. You need to be able to block out what happened in the past, and concentrate on the present and future. If we are unable to block out the past, it's unlikely that we'll succeed in the present and future.
