What the hell is with the ending, when Nicolson is standing with the sign that says July Ball 1921. Just wonderin if anyone knew what the ending meant.

The picture at the end suggests that Jack has always been part of the hotel. Earlier in the movie he is talking to Grady who says that Jack has always been the caretaker. Some people believe in a reincarnation theory, some people just believe in supernatural "shining" theory. I think that in a way he has always been a part of the hotel..it was just waiting for him.

If he "joined all the other ghosts" when he died, wouldn't Halloran have been in the picture, too? He was killed there.

While he ( Jack Nicolson ) was in the maze he froze to death and died. The meaning of the sign is that he's dead and is now with the other spirits/ghosts in the hotel.

Hope it helps.
The Shining is a great movie and the Stanley Hotel in Colorado is a great hotel ( it's the setting and the whole inspiration for Stephen King writing the novel)

Yes, he joined the rest of the spirits just as the previous caretaker did after he killed his family. (that butler guy he was talking to in the restroom)
