This can be one of many reasons.Bad hard Disk or Bad RAM or bad software. I will put it in laymans terms when formatting software is used to format the disk. If that software is corrupt you will get the blue screen of death. What you need to look at is the following. If the software is written to an original cd of xp then there should be no problem. Next thing to look at is bad disk. Try disconnecting all peripherals I.e any extra devices eg network card or extra cd roms and then formatting. If this does not work then you have no incompatibility problems. Next check the cd rom you are formatting from is working properly as it is this that is transferring media into your boot sector (ram)to format the disk. Try another cd rom drive. After using another cd rom and the problem still occurs look at another ram chip.(logical thought process this eh)The way it all works is disk in cd rom loads info into ram.Ram then carries out format format crashes problem with ram. Insert new ram (don't buy just borrow) run format if disk crashes problem is definitely hard disk. I know its the long way to do things but it is all logical. Hope this helps. Sounds like hard drive has bad sectors which will not format, may need to do a hard drive health check, but if available best to replace the hard drive, normally when sectors start to get corrupt the drive is on it's way out anyway

your hard drive has bad sectors, these can be fixed ,download this tool,it runs from a floppy disk...http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=SeaTools&vgnextoid=720bd20cacdec010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD
this will run through your hard drive and fix any bad sectors,i fixed a 40gb seagate barracuda hdd,was doing exactly whats going on with your drive
i was going to sling it but thought i would give that program a go and now its fine
once the tool has finished and fixed all bad sectors, format the drive using a start up disk...format c:
the start the re-installation again
good luck

XP home is like the Xp professional - just insert cd, it will start and go through until you get to the screen partition : then choose drive - C and choose partition "quick" on NTFS.

prior to formatting did you delete and re-create the old partition? then once done that, have you tried doing the quick format option? (should take less than a minute!)

Have you tried testing your RAM? Windows will not install if there is a bad ram stick in your computer. Try booting a program called MEMTEST, this will tell you if you have any problems with the ram.
