I treat a business collegue with deep respect and often give professional assistance when needed, without hesitation. I offer positive reinforcement, and buy lunch every once in a while, but this person never seems to have any respect for me.

It seems that this person only respects others who treat'em like an idiot. So what is the best way to treat this person like an idiot?

Next time you feel this person is being disrespectful, just ask this person if they have an issue with you.
I have done this before and had great results.

Confronting someone is hard, but treating someone like an idiot is a waste of time.

Usually, respect begets respect - you treat someone with deference,s/he also is likely to show the same deference to you. In your case, what makes you think s/he doesn't respect you? Have there been incidents? If not, just take a break and think over if are overdoing the helping part and getting under your colleague's feet. Overattention at times can get cloying.

Don't ever treat anyone like an idiot. You are doing what is right. You will live with that. Can you live with treating anyone less?

well... just be yourself dont treat him as an idiot...

but... try ignoring him for a little while... so that he realises your importance... avoid doing what he expects from you for a short time...

this always worked for me to make people realise my importance...

all the best.
