A friend and I will be going to Vegas in April, specifically to see the Bodies exhibit at the Tropicana. Since that will only take a few hours, I'd like to spend some time at a bar (or maybe a lounge?) where we can chat, people watch and generally just hang out and talk.
I know this seems like a weird thing when going to Vegas, but she is married with 2 kids (and doesn't drink usually) and, even though I am single, I'm not hoping to meet someone...on this trip :)
Any ideas for a place we can have a few drinks, that has a great atmosphere, but isn't too rowdy? ( I was thinking Ghost Bar...it looks so cool).

I have two favorite places to have a drink with friends and people watch..If you're interested in a nightclub scene with loud music, then these will not be for you. If you're looking for a great spot to share a conversation with friends, people watch and take in the incredible atmosphere this is it...
#1 - And it's not even close, for great atmosphere, people watching, and with a spectacular view of the Fountains of Bellagio. Mon Ami Gabi at Paris. It's a sidewalk cafe, on the strip, practically under the Eiffel Tower, with a view of the most incredible fountains on the planet.. It does not get any better than this..
#2 - At Sam's Town, they have an indoor park called Mystic Falls. It's a small forrest, there is a path through the forrest and a huge waterfall. I can't recall the name of the bar that sits on the edge of the park but it's a great spot to have a drink, people watch, and the show "Sunset Stampede" in the park is really cool , with lasers and water and "the wolf" - you'll see - the shows are at 2-6-8-10pm usually, the lasers show up better after dark...

There are sooo many in Vegas but if you just want to have a couple of drinks and relax, chat and people watch I can think of two pretty good ones. Closest to the Tropicana would be MGM. Inside just down the steps across from the Rainforest is a lounge that has entertainment daily, (singers-band-etc) it cost nothing to sit there except for maybe a couple of drinks (alcohol or not) you can listen to the music, chat and people watch as the casino is right there. The other would be the Carousel in the Courtyard. Between Harrahs and Imperial Palace. It is an open (outside) bar that is covered and totally keeps you out of the elements yet lets you watch the people walking and depending on the time may have entertainment going on. Have a great time.

Ghost Bar is a lot of hype. It has a nice view, but it's not worth it for the wait and the money you will have to shell out.
If the weather is nice during the day and you want to people watch and have a drink or two, I would recommend Nine Fine Irishmen, the Irish pub at New York New York diagonal across the street from Tropicana. They have an outside balcony and patio on the Strip, a nice beer selection, and good food.
*edit*
@ chelko - the bar you're talking about at MGM isn't there anymore. They took down the stage area and replaced it with a sports book and poker room. They built a completely new bar right in the middle, but there is no entertainment (unless you count waitresses periodically getting on tables to dance or bartenders twirling bottles entertainment). Not a bad place to go during the day, but at night it can get overly crowded and it's not worth crowding into.

You won't have any trouble finding bars or lounges to hang out in; every big casino has a lounge and several bars which are situated in the middle of everything. I haven't been there, but I believe the Ghost Bar is more of a pickup-club kind of place. I especially remember nice lounges and bars at Caesars, Mirage, Hilton, Flamingo, and Golden Nugget. I usually take my mom or sister, and we always find a nice place to relax. And the lounge shows are free for the price of a drink.

If you are fond of Vodka, the Mandalay Bay's Red Square Bar serves up vodka drinks with over 50 different kinds of vodka (or more) on hand and in very trendy, iced glasses and tables. It's a relaxed atmosphere and it's right next door to the Rum Jungle Bar/Club so you can watch all the people walking by dressed to the nines. Or, if you like what you see and hear you'll be able to pop in next door and check it out.

The Ghost isn't worth the wait and it's really crowded on the weekends. If you looking for a nice lounge to people watch I suggest the Centrifuge at the MGM Grand. It's small but it allows you to watch people going through the casino and the people in the lounge.

The bodies exhibit? Bleah.
Trop has the Knights show that you could take those kids too, Lance Burtons magic show is nearby, Circus Circus has kids type stuff that is entertaining enough for adults that they don't get too bored.
There are other things you can do with the kids, Ijust don't know where they are anymore, my kids grew up.
