My daughter had her ears pierced five weeks ago and came to me today and told me her ear was hard. I checked and it is infected. So I took the earring out to clean it and her ear really good. When I tried to put it back in she started crying and told me to take it back out. How do I treat the infection?

I would try some Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) and triple antibiotic ointment. She does need to get it back in. or it will have to be repierced. Dribble the H2O2 over the pierced opening as you twist the earring esp if you can get the earring back in with a little bit of the ointment on the stem. do this 3-4 times a day.

If your daughter is running a fever, the ear red, warm, swollen... then she should go in to the doctor to get oral antibiotics in conjunction with the the above. The pain is secondary to the swelling.

Ok heres what to you do, three easy steps that can cause the infection to go away and not get worse.

1. LEAVE THE EARRING OUT!!!!! If it is killing her that bad then it is probably that bad.

2. CLEAN IT LIKE CRAZY WITH ALCOHOL!!!!! This will get any bacteria out of there but you have to do it once every 3-4 hours.

3. TAKE HER TO THE DOCTOR!!! If it is as bad as it sounds then she needs antibiotics. They will remove any infection that isn't cleanned up by the alcohol.

If you don't treat this properly it can get extremely bad. I remember as a little girl, I didn't get any treatment for a ear piercing infection. I started getting sick, and left the earring in because if hurt so bad take it out. Well I was admitted into the hospital because of the infections.

P.S. ALSO CHECK HER FOR NICKLE ALLERGIES!!!! Sometimes people are allergic to nickle in jewlery and it can cause reactions.

What you need to do is clean the ear like crazy. Especially if she wants the earring back in, you've got to clean the piercing at least once every three hours. Here's what has worked the best for me as an antiseptic for infected piercings: Witch Hazel, and Tom's of Maine Mouthwash.

Witch Hazel works exactly like peroxide. It kills germs, but it is not harsh and anti-healing like peroxide. It's right next to peroxide at the store.

The Mouthwash doesn't have to be Tom's of Maine, but it should be non-alcoholic, since alcohol is anti-healing. It might sound odd, but mouthwash kills germs in your mouth, and it also kills germs elsewhere.

Just put the Witch Hazel or Mouthwash of a cotton ball and dab the infected area. Hold the cotton ball against the skin for a few minutes.

This treatment worked perfectly for me. The worst thing it ever solved was a big, hard crustie on my cartiliege. I did both of them every hour on the hour, and in about a week I was good as new. I even kept the earring in.

Hope that works for you, infections suck.

Remove the earring and post 3 times a day.Cleanse them with rubbing alcohol.Apply bacitracin ointment on the infected area make sure to wash the area before you do this with soap.If it gets worse go to the doc.I had this except for 2 weeks and literally the right side of my face (side of infected ear) started to drastically swell up.For a second i thought i had elephantitis but found out it was just an ear lobe infection!!!

Leave the earring OUT. Do NOT replace it until the infection is completely gone. Wash with hot water, clean with Claire's ear care antiseptic wash. Or some other wash with Benzalkonium Chloride, NOT Benzoyl Peroxide.

If the infection does not go away or gets worse, see a doctor ASAP.

Take her to a doc and get her anti-biotics. Also try applying aloe vera on the site or even turmeric paste.

My wife had part of her ear removed for the same reason you are mentioning. Please see a doctor without too much delay!
