I just pulled out my old leather coat. Its been in storage for a while, and even before then it was in used condition (hand-me-down). The coat is double breasted, 3/4 length black leather and the only problems are that the leather is stiff and feels hard, and there are 5 missing buttons and small pea-sized holes in the leather where the buttons used to be. I need any information on how to repair this coat and get it into the best condition possible for as little money as possible and I need the coat to be ready to wear by saturday morning.

Please, if you don't have any helpful info then don't answer, and in advance, thanks for all who do contribute information.

Mink oil is the best conditioner for old leather. I have a leather trench coat that dates back to 1977. I'd use Tandy, as the other poster suggests, for the repairs.
Good Luck.

Go to:

www.tandyleather.com

They have a store locator on the site. The store people are knowledgeable on these things, and have all the products needed to do your repairs.
I imagine they will recommend Neat's Foot Oil or Mink Oil to recondition/soften the leather.
As far as the pea sized holes where the buttons were, you might consider using screw back conchos instead of buttons. You can also back them up with a disc of vegetable tanned leather, as a strengthening gusset.

You might try leather glove softener (for baseball gloves), you also might try leather seat cleaner by Meguiars..
For the buttons..go to a fabric/sewing shop and find new ones, BIGGER than the ones you have on their now. Take the coat with you, so you can audition buttons. Then hand sew the new buttons on, providing the leather is in better condition.
