You know, I don't know. It really is a pain in the behind isn't it? And although many will tell you it is because you need to practice what you learn, one would think that going to school for six and a half hours a day would be enough.
I can understand homework in the later high school years, as well as in college and university. I these cases it really is necessary, because you are having to learn so much so fast, and because the information you are learning is not going to be repeated over and over again throughout your education (like learning how to count, or analyzing To Kill A Mockingbird). However prior to that, I believe it only shows a lack of competency on the teacher's part.

That's actually a good question, but you won't like the answer. Homework is necessary to the learning process.
Do you know how you got good at walking and talking? You practiced walking and talking. Well, you get good at writing and calculating by practicing. That's where homework fits in.

Well,we have to do homework because we can make sure ourself is fully understand what we have learnt !
When we do homework, we can remember more about what we have learnt !
When exam is coming, we don't have to worry we are not prepared !
At least when we do homework, we already saw those kind of questions, so maybe we won't totally die !
Another point is when we do homework, our teacher will definitely check our homework !
When the teacher check our homework, they will know our progress, whether we are still weak or can do well already !
Therefore, our teacher can pay more attention on those weak students !
So, it helps students !

Homework should really be an exercise that stimulates your mind and makes you enjoy the learning process more. Teachers have made it into a boring drugery of effort and work requiring hours and hours of your time. We have homework it seems to see how much pain we can inflict on students....perhaps - it helps you sleep at night because you fall asleep completing it right?

because practice makes PERFECT... :) I am not a fan of homework...I was a high school teacher for 5 years and never gave one piece of homework except for extra credit.
I guess it is supposed to keep your brain going but I am a firm believer in brain resting :)

Make up excuses like:
I was mugged on the way to school and the mugger took everything I had
Our puppy toilet trained on it
Some aliens from outer space borrowed it so they could study how the human brain worked
I put it in a safe, but lost the combination
I loaned it to a friend, but he suddenly moved away
Our furnace stopped working and we had to burn it to stop ourselves from freezing
I left it in my shirt and my mother put it in the washing machine
I didn't do it because I didn't want to add to your already heavy workload
My little sister ate it

We have homework because it shows that we are learning something in class. It is practice for the lesson that we learned and it shows that we weren't sleeping in class. :)

Cause it makes you smart so you can go to college, and not end up changing your name to Candy and dancing on a pole so you can afford to buy food for your 6 babies. Is that enough?
