Bali is absolutely the perfect choice for Honeymooners.
Since it's also ranked No. 1 Island for the fifth time for the World Best Island 2006 by Travel and Leisure magazine, no question is needed about people appreciation of Bali.
Ubud, for example is perfect for those who loves tranquility. Traditional villages, great mountains and lakes around (kintamani areas), art galleres and superb hotels are located here.
South of Bali (jimbaran, Uluwatu, Nusa Dua) has great views, ideal for beach lovers, not so crowded as in Kuta, which means more privacy.
Amazingly romantic sunset. Great waves and lotsa water activities. And again, great hotel and resorts.
Alternatively, have a visit to Gili Islands and Lombok. Idylic and have not been overexplored.
Or, try to contact a Tour Service such as Sobek, Bali Adv etc. They have some special special stuffs for honeymooners, i.e a trip to some secluded islands which only you and your lover can enjoy.

Bali is a pretty cool place to visit. I would describe Kuta beach as "Waikiki meets Tijuana"... If I were to assume you have never been to either, basically, Kuta is pretty much where most of the "tourist" action starts and that you will likely get sick of in about an hour. Lots of shops, restaurants and the like but you will get tired of it quick.
Reasons to go to Bali:
- Great hotels (Ritz, Four Seasons, Intercontinental, etc.) which are reasonably priced.
- People are some of the friendliest people you will meet in the entire world.
- Ubud and other natural areas are spectacular.
- Great place to pick up cheap goods that might suit a new home for you and your new bride.
- Restaurants can be world class in terms of cuisine and very well priced considering what you fine in other locales.
- Great outdoor recreation such as surfing, hiking, golf, swimming, etc.
Reasons not to go to Bali:
- Some areas appear to be run down.
- Kuta can be pretty disappointing.
I highly recommend Bali for a honeymoon. Stay at a top-notch resort (Ritz is great....) and you will be treated like a king/queen. Find a local drive to pick you up each day and drive you around for $10-$20 for the entire day. Go to dinner at the Living Room up in Simiyak (forgot the spelling). Visit a few temples, watch a few rituals and make sure to go up to the rainforests in ubud.

There are literally thousands of great places to see in Indonesia besides Bali (6,000+ other islands). I haven't seen them all yet, but I've spent years there trying. But since you're a single American (like me) female (I'm a guy) you should really rethink you're solo backpacking plans. Indonesians can be some of the most friendly and fun people on the planet, but crimes against women, especially rape, are more rampant there than any of the dozens of other countries I've visited. Bali is different. It's Hindu (as opposed Muslim) there and they have way more respect for women, westerners, and western women in particular. My advice is go to Bali first, hook up with a group of fellow travelers or a cool local guy (Twice Bar on Poppies2 in Kuta would be a good place to look) to travel with you if you want to see the rest of the country (Java has some nice temples, Borobudur and Prambahnan, and crazy volcanoes like Bromo). But really unless you have more than a couple months you'll have plenty to check out on Bali and the surrounding islands Nusa Lombongan, Lombok, and the famous (for no police and great "parties") Gili islands. They have all the crazy culture, volcanoes, butterflies, flowers, sunsets, beaches and temples you could ever want to see, and some of the least dangerous locals (including police and army). Oh, and your question about war. Indo isn't at war with any of it's neighbors but it does have a few internal conflicts. Papua has been in a state of civil war for years and most of it is off limits to travelers, Central Sulawesi has alot of religeous violence and is also off limits. The tsunami seems to have drowned the civil war in Sumatera, but I still would avoid the Northern part of that island. And there are still small conflicts on hundreds of other islands. Remember this is a third word country that was a military dictatorship less than a decade ago and the army still holds most of the power. Actually it's easier just to tell you the places that are safe, email me for more info.

bali is fantastic, amazing sunset, absolutely romantic.. we stayed at grand hyatt bali nusa dua, the view was breathtaking. Food was a problem for me as i find that food in bali was quite bland, but there's a nice authentic indian restaurant called the Maharani. Bali is known for its hinduism heritage and art. Temperature is humid all year round. If thats ur cuppa then go on and enjoy Bali.
Another option is to go to Malta. Temperature is amazing all year round, unlike Bali where its warm and sticky, try staying at the Marriot, the service is wonderful and located right next to the casino, clubs and restaurants are just a walking distance. People are friendly.
I somehow find Budapest pretty amazing too.
But if u are more into nature, try Palau island. U can drive around looking at how the local rural lives, its as if u are in the Apocalypto movie!! Its east of Phillipines, west of Honolulu. They have the most wonderful coral reef in the world. People are super friendly. Or try Fiji. U wont regret it.

About 15 of us stayed in Ramada Bintang Bali and it was great. The services were good and they speak lots of langauges too, just to cater the needs of foreigners. I was not on a honeymoon but the setting is just so lively and there were places too where I did not stay in stars hotel, there were places that were generally just for lodging but sometimes they have neat ideas you know... they have opened bathrooms and I guess I dont know, maybe it never rains over the bathrooms haha... but it was just good. Then you get the tropical fruits squizzed over with a lemon-like fruits and it's just nice. And this is just of a small lodging, so can you imagine the big hotels? Dances can be ordered and anything can be looked around for, just depends on your budget!

Bali was a great place for Honeymoon, but its popularity as a tourist spot has attracted the attention of muslim terrorist. THe risk is low, but I prefer a place where the risk is next to none.
