The origin of breaking bread (eating) comes from the olden days...when you had guests over, you shared a loaf of bread, (or whatever you were eating) and broke it so that it would not crumble, like the amish_ren answer. Slicing bread usually causes it to be crushed and crumbly, unless it's the store bought stuff. Back in Biblical times, the term breaking bread was often used to mean the people ate unleavened bread, which was best broken apart rather than cut. Imagine how you would separate saltine crackers...would you cut them and watch them crumble...or would you just break them apart at the perforation lines? Breaking wind is slang for expelling flatulence...it is the release of air or wind from the anus...when you hear the sound of it escaping, it sounds like it is breaking out of something...and then you want to make a break for fresh air...lol.
