Even if you didn't have a specific address for awhile. People mailed you at General Delivery, town, state......

It depends on the size of the town of course. I know Seiad Valley, California, had general delivery up to, well, five years ago, that's when I hiked through there once and met somebody who gave me their address as their name, c/o General Delivery, Seiad Valley, CA. Those towns I'm sure must exist somewhere. Having lived in the city for most of my adult life, I dream of moving to a peaceful place like that. With snow in the winter no less.

Mails intended for people with no specific addresses will be considered as General Delivery.

I would. To any office they happened to be running for, actually, so long as they seemed to me the most qualified for the position. I say the same to a religious runner, as well. All that matters to me is how qualified I feel they are to do the job. Crazies like the teabaggers are obviously not forerunners ;) Religion and politics are too closely entwined for a country that supposedly has separation of church and state. Do what you want in your private lives, but religion has no place in government. To the crazy religious people that only care if a person goes to church and is a good enough actor to play off the values they want to see in public, consider that deep down a politician is only a politician and they are all skeevy in some way.

Yes, you can still do that, but some Post Offices won't let the people know they have mail. I sent a letter with a check to my sister, and she didn't find out about it for almost six months.
(This was even a small town where everyone knew each other).
Advice; write "URGENT" on the lower left corner of the envelope. Should be OK.

My local Post Office does - but it is more expensive than getting a P.O. Box.

Welcome to the world of POST-9/11. Because of terrorist acts the U.S. has decided that it is imperative to know who you are and where you live what time you eat, shave, make whoopy, and/or open your eyes. Don't that make you feel so much safer?
