Actually it depends, When you get a MP3 device about 0.2-0.3 of a gig is already gone just to allow the device to run its programs. now after this your left with about a good 3.6-3.8 gigs of memory. Depending on the music u like your gigs maay last and they may not. My music varies. I have songs up to 24 minutes long! so keep in mind the length of your songs really determines how much space you use. 1000 songs is only an estimate based on each song being 4:00. But usually if you love music the way I do, you'll only hold about 770-950 songs. I almost garuntee you wont get more that 1000 or even reach 1000 unless a lot of your songs are 2-3:00. Now if ur only using a storage device, then thats a different story, but same concept. so yes dont be surprised if you MP3 stops allowing more files before you hit 1000. bummer eh? pay all that money and dont get your full 1000 songs, lol. I hope I helped.

Depends on the size of the file. The average MP3 is 3 to 4 MBs. So take 4000 and divide by 3 or 4. You'll get the average amount of songs. That would be the MAXIMUM hold on the player.

I assume you are taking about gigbytes and not gigabits. Yeah, I hate gigabits too more gigabytes. I gigabyte is roughly 8,589,934,592 bytes. Not all NAND flash memory is the same. Your ipod might have less or more than 4GB. Well assuming that each song 4 minutes long and at a shabby 128 kbits/sec, then yeah a thousand songs maybe. But if you have cd music or apple music, then its at least 192 kilobits/sec. You won't hold a thousand songs then.
