I understand your point. If on the other hand fuel prices climb again there should probably be a lot more of the Smart Cars on the road and less monster vehicles. Also I seem to remember seeing a display of the Smart Car that had its skin off, so to speak, and it had a lot of safety features to protect its occupant. If I am correct, its entire body is a giant roll cage. Also there were airbags everywhere. Also as it is small, it is probably a lot more maneuverable thus more likely to avoid the accident.

I live in Canada, where the Smart Car has been out for a couple of years. In the city, it is very popular as a delivery car, a company car, security vehicle, and it's safer than it appears. Granted, a collision between my full size truck and a smart car would likely be bad news ... for in city driving they are excellent! My neighbor has one and loves it!

I sat in one in Germany last summer. I am a big guy at 6' 250 lb and I was almost as big as the whole car. My Mom (native German) wants one, but I am trying to convince her that she has no chance against a full size truck or SUV.

I have no idea what the safety ratings are...there has to be some standard...I have a hard time picturing the smart car winning a fight with an SUV.

If every car was as small as that car is, it wouldn't be an issue.
I think that's what they are going for.
But as for now, I would stay away from them...(not to mention they are butt-ugly!)
