I got a Dell a few years ago, but for the past 1 - 1.5 years, the fan is incredebly loud. It's not hitting against anything, it's just circulating air really really fast.

I have 60% free space, eliminated useless background programs, defragged, cleared files, performed a virus/spyware scan and found nothing, and this thing is still going like I have 10000 programs running.

What's wrong with this peice of Dell junk?

Note: It's not loud at all when I start it up, only once I start a program, such as IE.

It sounds like you have a fan going out. is it a PC or A laptop? if it's a PC remove the two screws holding the side panel on slide the panel back and look at the external cooling fan, if their is a lot of dirt that could be the problem, also look at the CPU Fan if it's dirty then blow it out with air, since you said it's been loud for at least a year that means you have noticed a change in the sound from what it used to sound like and is getting worse with time. If it's a external fan spray a little WD-40 0n the fan without it running, start it up if it does not make noise you know the problem, (bad fan) you can buy fans at any computer shop for 5 to 10 bucks. if the Processor fan is going out you Can buy a new one just remove the clips remove the fan wire and take a spin down to staples or any computer shop buy a new one. If the CPU fan is replaced be sure to put the special processor grease on it. Good Luck. and happy computing.

ONLY TWO things can cause this 1. Imbalance ( broken or distorted fan blade) 2. Bad bearings Sometimes it can be temporarily cured by blowing out the computer with compressed air But usually if it is a bad bearing it will need to be replaced. You can (sometimes) effect a work around by undervolting This method lowers the cpu temp which then causes the fan to turn on less often thereby eliminateing noise. Long term solution get a new fan before you need it. and your computer fails Keep it as a spare Just in case since it is sometimes a long process to get parts. Futher info on undervolting Link below or search Nordikhardware :-) gl

Look at the lead, and if it has 3 wires, the speed signal is probably bonkers. Fix: new fan. I prefer the 2 lead variety that runs at a set speed, and more of them. Never heard of dirt making a fan run faster guys. Only a speed control can do that number.

Open it and clean out the dust. I recommend a method combining canned air to blast out the dust, and a vacuum cleaner to suck the dust out the air. That way you don't knock anything loose with the vacuum nozzle.

If you smoke around it, especially if you smoke heavily, you may find a film covering the insides. You may have to have that professionally cleaned, or it may be cheaper to replace the system.

I suggest that you should stop worrying about that and just go ahead and buy a new fan which should not cost you more than few dollars. Go to www.support.dell.com and look at instructions on how the PC can be opened and just replace that .. It should not more than 30 mins.
