There's a couple of reasons why they couldn't get more offense this off-season. For one the free agency market wasn't very good. What they needed was a 3B and there was no one available, Aramis Ramirez didn't even get to hit FA.
Now as far as trading for offense most teams wanted Scot Shields, Ervin Santana or Jered Weaver (or a combo of these 3). If they trade Shields the bullpen wouldn't be as effective he anchors the bullpen. Without him the bullpen wouldn't be as strong because they would need to use K-Rod for more innings which by the end of the season he'll have a dead arm. As far as trading Santana or Weaver the problem there is Colon's injury. If any of those get traded for offense they would be missing one starting pitcher and besides why weaken their strength, which is pitching.
The offense isn't great but they have the potential to be good. Rivera who can be a good offensive threat in the lineup will miss the first 2 months due to injury. But when he comes back it will be a big lift. Also Mike Napoli, will have more experience and he definitely has home run power. There's Howie Kendrick he has good gap power. A healthy Anderson can still provide good offense as well. Orlando Cabrera can be good offensively too. And of course there's Vlad.

Maybe because they're intimadated by the A's every year. After all, they may have lost Frank Thomas, but this year, they have Mike Piazza and Shannon Stewart. But actually, the Angels do have a pretty good offense. Especially with Gary Matthews Jr. thrown in there, they're pretty good and will contend with the A's this year for the AL West title. Should be pretty interesting and exciting this coming year.

ocab 18 analyzed it. The Angels are based on the old Dodgers formula, get a man on first, advance him to second, try to score him. Eke out a run here and a run there and rely on quality pitching from the likes of Shields and K-Rod to hold whatever slim lead they have. It has worked off and on since 2002.

overpaying gary matthews jr was a huge huge huge mistake. i'm sure you've seen it year after year: guy has a good fluke season and he cashes in only to hit .270 with 17 homeruns and a million strikeouts.
anderson is getting old and injury prone. they MUST make a mid season trade.
sorry i didnt answer your question, but i am confused and lost just like every other angels fan! ha
