I am planning a 3-week trip to Dharamsala from early March. People say there are plenty of accomodations and I don't need to make reservations. But since I am staying in one place for a long time I want a reasonably nice friendly place, where it is easy to make local friends...?

You do not need to make reservations. Most of the hotels are 1 star and you can find them just a bit uphill (nearly 3 minutes' walk away from the buddhist monastery ) , breakfast is tea/ coffee and omelette . It is very peaceful and many stores are owned by Nepalese people and most of the jewellery stores are owned by the Muslims. You can see Hindu Indians, Muslim Indians and Buddhist Indians in this beautiful mountainous city...The prices are so cheap. Please enjoy the fresh morning air for me.
Enjoy your trip please.
