Despite its incredible popularity, The Smurfs actually encountered some controversy. Some adults considered the show sexist in its use of the one original female character, SMURFETTE (who was created by Gargamel in a plot to catch the Smurfs.)
SASSETTE was created by the Smurflings to keep Smurfette company. She has red pigtails and pink overalls. She is a rough and tumble tomboy who is always asking “Why?” and “How?”. Sassette and Smurfette are like chalk and cheese.
NANNY SMURF theoretically predates Smurfette and Sassette, but does not make her debut until the 1988-1989 season in episode #353, "The Lost Smurf," an elderly smurf.

Geez, it was magic. All of the smurfs existed before Smurfette was created. Gargamel created Smurfette, do you remember? Smurfette, when originally created was dark haired. Pappa Smurf used his magic to counter act Gargamel's and made her into that blonde. (Sad statement on society, a dark haired girl wasn't good enough, it was considered an improvement when Papa Smurf made her blonde!!!)

Gargamel made the smurfs. smurfette was made to trick the other ones into captivity but it didn't work.
