Actually speaking, India is a diverse country with over twenty one official languages other than Hindi and English. Malaylam, tamil, Marathi, telegu, Urdu, Tulu, Bodo, Bengali, Karbi,Bhojpuri, Maithali, Magahi, Chattisgarhi, Konkani, Potugeese, Punjabi, Kashmiri, Pahari, Kannada, Kodavva Thak, Kashi, garo, Farsi, Metei, Mizo, Oriya, rajasthani, nepali, Kokborok etc are the other languages.It may be literally impossible to find a person who speaks all of theses languages.

There are quite a few languages spoken in India with people from neighbouring states speaking languages which the other would not understand
Northern India speaks Hindi and various regional dialects of Hindi like Marathi, Gujarathi, Bengali, while in South India, the predominant languages spoken are Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada.
But in most parts of India, you should be able to survive with some basic English and decent Hindi.
